Are Maternity Photos Worth It? What You'll Be Glad You Captured | Lancaster Maternity Photographer - Angie Englerth Photography

Are Maternity Photos Worth It? What You'll Be Glad You Captured

If you're expecting a baby, you've probably wondered whether maternity photos are really worth it. Between preparing for baby, buying all the things, and getting ready for a whole new season of life, it's easy to wonder if professional photos are something you actually need.

And I get it. There are so many expenses when you're preparing for a baby, and maternity photos might feel like something you can skip.

But after more than 12 years of photographing families, I've come to appreciate just how meaningful it is to document this season. Not because you need another thing on your to-do list, but because pregnancy is such a unique chapter of your story, and it's one that passes much faster than you might expect.

A Beautiful Summer Evening at Middle Creek

The images throughout this post are from a recent maternity session I photographed at Middle Creek on a beautiful summer evening. These two were preparing to welcome their very first baby, which made this season especially sweet to document.

And here's a fun little connection: I've actually photographed both of their siblings, too! I love when photography brings me back around to the same families in different seasons of life. Getting to capture this exciting chapter for them made the evening even more special.

As we walked through the beautiful summer landscape and enjoyed that soft evening light, we captured this little glimpse of life before their baby arrives. Their little family looks different now, but they'll always get to look back on these images and remember what it felt like to wait for their little one.

It's one of the things I love most about maternity photography. You're not just documenting a growing belly. You're capturing the anticipation, the connection, and the last little chapter before everything changes.

If you're on the fence about maternity photos, here are a few things I think you'll be glad you captured.

Pregnancy Is a Season, Not Just a Countdown

When you're in the middle of pregnancy, the days can sometimes feel long. You're navigating a changing body, preparing for a baby, and probably thinking about a hundred things that need to happen before your little one arrives.

But one day, you'll look back and realize how quickly it all went.

You'll forget some of the little details. You'll have a hard time remembering just how your belly looked or what it felt like to know your baby was growing inside you. And while you may remember the big milestones, it's often the smaller details that become the most meaningful over time.

Maternity photos give you a way to look back at this season and remember what life looked like before everything changed.

You don't have to feel your absolute best every single day of pregnancy to deserve beautiful photos. You don't need to know exactly how to pose or feel completely comfortable in front of the camera, either. That's what I'm here to help with.

It's About More Than Just Your Baby Bump

When people think about maternity photos, they often picture a pregnant mom standing alone in a beautiful dress, holding her belly.

And while those images are beautiful, there's so much more to this season worth remembering.

It's the way your husband looks at you as you prepare to become parents again. It's the little hands of an older sibling resting on your belly. It's the excitement, the anticipation, and the way your family is growing before you even get to meet your newest little one.

If this isn't your first baby, maternity photos can be especially meaningful. Your older children are part of this story, too. This is their season of becoming a big brother or big sister, and it's worth remembering what your family looked like before your newest addition arrived.

These are the kinds of images that become even more meaningful as the years go by.

You Don't Have to Figure Everything Out Yourself

One of the biggest reasons moms hesitate to book maternity photos is that they don't know what to wear, where to go, or what they'll do in front of the camera.

I want this experience to feel easy for you.

As a maternity photographer serving Ephrata and Lancaster County, PA, I offer a client closet filled with maternity dresses to help take some of the guesswork out of planning your session. We'll talk through your vision, choose a location, and figure out the details together.

During your session, I'll guide you through posing and give you direction so you don't have to wonder what to do with your hands or how to stand. We'll also leave room for the natural moments that happen along the way.

My goal is for you to walk away with beautiful, timeless images that feel like you and your family, without feeling like you had to do all the work to make them happen.

When Is the Best Time to Take Maternity Photos?

Maternity sessions are typically planned for around 28 to 34 weeks of pregnancy, although the ideal timing can vary depending on your pregnancy, comfort, and personal preference.

I generally recommend reaching out during your second trimester to plan your session. This gives us time to talk through your vision, find a date that works, and choose your wardrobe.

For outdoor maternity sessions in Lancaster County, I love photographing in the evening light leading up to sunset. The soft, warm light creates a beautiful backdrop without needing an elaborate setup.

The most important thing is to plan ahead so you're not trying to squeeze photos into the final few weeks before baby arrives.

So, Are Maternity Photos Worth It?

I think they are, especially when you look at them as part of your family's story rather than just another set of pictures.

Your baby won't stay this tiny forever. Your family won't always look exactly like it does today. And this season, with all its anticipation and change, deserves to be remembered, too.

You may not realize just how much these images mean to you until you're holding your baby in your arms and looking back at the days when they were still tucked safely inside your belly.

If you're expecting and considering maternity photos in Ephrata or Lancaster County, PA, I'd love to help you document this chapter in a way that feels natural, beautiful, and true to your family.
