If you've ever thought, "There's no way my toddler will cooperate for family photos," you're not alone.
In fact, it's one of the most common concerns I hear from parents before their session.
Here's the good news: your children don't have to be perfectly behaved to create beautiful family photos.
As a mom of four, I know firsthand that little ones (and let’s be honest, even big ones) have big feelings, short attention spans, and minds of their own. The goal isn't perfection…it's capturing your family just as you are in this season of life.
Here are my favorite tips to help your session feel fun and relaxed for everyone.
1. Talk About the Session Like It's an Adventure
A few days before your session, tell your children you're going on a special family adventure.
Instead of saying, "You need to smile and behave," try something like:
"We're going to play together, snuggle, and take some fun pictures with Miss Angie!"
Kids feed off our expectations. When they think they're going to play instead of perform, everyone has a better time.
2. Skip the "Smile!" Practice
This one surprises a lot of parents.
Please don't spend the week before asking your child to practice smiling for the camera.
The best smiles happen naturally. During your session, I'll use games, movement, and silly prompts to create genuine laughter instead of forced grins.
Those authentic moments are always my favorites.
3. Make Sure Everyone Has a Full Belly
Hungry kids (and hungry adults!) rarely enjoy having their pictures taken.
Try to eat a meal or substantial snack before your session, and bring a few mess-free snacks just in case we need a quick break.
Some great options include:
Dry cereal
Pretzels
Fruit snacks
Avoid anything colorful or messy that could stain clothes or little faces.
4. Don't Worry About Every Little Hair
One of the biggest stressors for parents is trying to keep everyone looking "perfect."
Here's a secret...
Toddlers run.
Babies drool.
Hair gets messy.
And that's okay.
I'll help fix little details throughout your session, but don't let a crooked bow or a few fly-aways steal your joy.
5. Leave the Bribing to Me
It's tempting to say things like:
"If you smile, you can have ice cream!"
Unfortunately, that usually creates more pressure than motivation.
Instead, let me build a connection with your child. I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to keep little ones engaged, and if we need to take breaks, we absolutely will.
6. Trust the Process
Some of the most beautiful images happen in between the "posed" moments.
The giggles after a tickle.
A toddler reaching for Mom's hand.
A quiet cuddle with Dad.
These are the moments you'll treasure years from now.
You don't need children who sit perfectly still.
You just need your family.
7. Relax! Your Kids Will Follow Your Lead
Children are incredibly good at picking up on our emotions.
If you're worried about getting the "perfect" photo, they'll often feel that pressure too.
Instead, focus on loving on your family.
Laugh. Snuggle. Play.
Let your kids be kids. I'll take care of the rest.
One Last Thing...
I promise you this: I've photographed enough families to know that the sessions parents worry about the most often become their favorites.
So if your toddler is shy, your preschooler is energetic, or your baby needs extra cuddles, don't stress.
That's completely normal.
My job isn't to expect perfection, it's to create a relaxed experience where your family's personality can shine through.
Years from now, your children won't remember whether they smiled on cue.
They'll remember being wrapped in your arms, hearing your laughter, and feeling loved.
And those are the memories worth preserving.
