Time is a thief in that quiet, sneaky way…the days feel long, but somehow the years slip right through your fingers. One minute you’re rocking your baby to sleep, and the next you’re watching them step into their teenage years, wondering how it all went so fast. Lately, I’ve found myself flipping back through old photos, holding onto the little details I never want to forget…and realizing just how much these images matter.
5 Creative Ideas for Unique Family Photos
5 Creative Ideas for Unique Family Photos
Family photos do not have to mean stiff poses on a couch or the same park bench everyone else uses. The most memorable images often come from authentic, playful moments that reflect your family’s personality.
Here are five creative ideas to make your family photos fun, unique, and truly yours. There are also tips on how to capture those magical moments.
1. Backyard Adventures
Your own backyard can be full of photo opportunities. Whether it is a garden, a swing set, or just a sunny patch of grass, kids can explore and play naturally.
Why it works: Kids feel comfortable in their own space and you get relaxed, authentic expressions.
Tip: Let them run, pick flowers, or explore. You will be amazed at how those candid moments translate into beautiful photos.
2. Family Picnics
Set up a cozy blanket, bring a basket of snacks, and let your family enjoy a picnic.
Why it works: Everyone can relax and you can capture laughter, little spills, and genuine connection.
Tip: Bring props like a favorite book, tea set, or soft toys to make it feel personal.
3. Cooking or Baking Together
If your family loves spending time in the kitchen, turn it into a session. Flour on noses, little hands stirring batter, and shared giggles create timeless memories.
Why it works: It is interactive, messy in the best way, and filled with emotion.
Tip: Keep the focus on connection, not perfection. Authentic moments shine brighter than perfectly plated cookies.
4. Outdoor Playtime
Capture kids running, jumping, climbing, or tossing a ball. Movement creates energy and natural smiles that posed shots rarely achieve.
Why it works: Play brings out personality and the photos feel lively, genuine, and fun.
Tip: Use prompts like “who can jump the highest” or “show me your silliest dance move” to spark laughter.
5. Include Your Family’s Passions
Think about what makes your family your family. Pets, musical instruments, hobbies, or even a favorite board game can all become the centerpiece of your session.
Why it works: It tells your story, not just your faces. Years later, those images will bring back memories of what made your family special at that moment.
The key to unique family photos is capturing real connection and joy, not just perfect poses. With a little creativity, you can turn your session into a fun experience and get photos you will actually want to hang on your walls.
If you are ready to create personal, memorable family photos in Lancaster, PA, let’s book your session. I will help you bring your family’s personality to life through backyard adventures, picnics, messy baking, and more.
5 Mistakes Families Make When Choosing a Photographer (And How to Avoid Them)
Let’s be honest…planning a family photo session can feel a bit…overwhelming. Between coordinating outfits, getting the kids to cooperate, and figuring out which location will actually look good in photos, it’s a lot.
And here’s the thing: choosing the wrong photographer can make it even more stressful. You don’t want your “special family moment” to end up looking like a rushed selfie.
So, here are five mistakes families often make when picking a photographer and how you can avoid them so your session is smooth, fun, and leaves you with photos you actually love.
1. Picking Someone Just Because They’re Cheap
Look, I get it. We all want a good deal. But when it comes to photography, you really do get what you pay for. A super low price can mean rushed sessions, inconsistent editing, or photos that don’t truly capture your family.
Pro tip: Think about the value, not just the price. Experience, style, and a full-service process are worth it. Your photos aren’t just files, they’re memories you’ll display on your walls for years.
2. Ignoring Their Style
Have you ever seen a photographer’s Instagram and thought, “These are gorgeous!” only to get the gallery and realize it’s not quite your vibe? Happens more than you’d think.
Pro tip: Scroll through their full galleries, not just the highlights. Make sure their style matches your vision whether that’s timeless and bold, soft and candid, or a mix of both.
3. Forgetting the Experience Matters
If you’ve ever tried to wrangle toddlers for a photo session, you know it’s…an adventure. A photographer who doesn’t know how to work with kids can make it stressful instead of fun.
Pro tip: Look for someone who guides you, knows how to get real smiles, and keeps the session light and enjoyable. (Yes, you can have a stress-free photo session!)
4. Not Thinking About Prints and Products
It’s easy to think, “I’ll just get the digital files and figure it out later.” But without guidance, those beautiful photos often sit on a hard drive or phone.
Pro tip: Ask about albums, prints, and wall art. A photographer who helps you turn images into something you can actually enjoy every day is worth their weight in gold.
5. Waiting Too Long to Book
Especially if you’re looking for a fall, holiday, or spring session, waiting until the last minute can be risky. Popular photographers fill up fast.
Pro tip: Plan ahead, book early, and schedule a consultation. That way, you can focus on the fun stuff like outfits, locations, and family laughs…without the panic.
Choosing the right photographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Avoid these mistakes, and you’ll end up with photos that feel effortless, joyful, and totally you.
If you’re ready to capture your family in timeless, joyful photos (without the chaos), let’s chat and book your session in Lancaster, PA. I’ll guide you every step of the way from wardrobe to wall art so you actually enjoy the experience as much as the final photos.
From Garden Paths to Giggles: Making Backyard Photos Fun | Lancaster Pa Photographer Angie Englerth
There is something magical about photographing families in their own backyard. The comfort of home, familiar surroundings, and natural curiosity of children combine to create moments that feel effortless and joyful.
Recently, I had the chance to turn one family’s backyard garden into a photo wonderland. The results were playful, authentic, and full of connection. Here is how it all unfolded and how you can create your own backyard adventure.
A Backyard Full of Laughter
The session started with the kids exploring the garden. Butterflies, blooms, and a little sunlight streaming through the trees set the perfect scene. The moment they ran barefoot across the grass, giggling and chasing each other, the photos began to tell their story naturally.
Little Adventures and Big Moments
We incorporated small activities to keep the kids engaged. Picking flowers, examining a ladybug, or pretending the garden was a magical forest made the experience playful and lighthearted. Even moments that felt messy or imperfect, like fallen petals or a little dirt on hands, became some of my favorite shots.
Capturing Connection Through Play
Instead of stiff poses, I guided the family through fun prompts. “Who has the silliest face?” “Let’s see a jumping contest” and “Share a secret with your sibling” were all ways to spark laughter and genuine interaction. These prompts kept energy high and captured natural connections between the family members.
Timing is Everything
We scheduled the session during the golden hour, the hour before sunset. The light was soft and warm, making the garden glow and giving the photos a timeless, dreamy feel. Planning the session for early morning or late afternoon created the perfect natural light for even a small backyard.
From Backyard to Beautiful Memories
By the end of the session, we had a collection of images that told the family’s story authentically. The kids’ personalities shone through, the parents were relaxed, and the garden became a wonderland full of laughter, exploration, and love. A backyard session does not just produce photos. It creates memories that feel real, joyful, and timeless.
Your backyard holds the potential for a magical family session. With a little creativity, some fun prompts, and a willingness to let the kids explore, you can turn your own home into a photo wonderland.
If you want to capture your family’s authentic joy at home in Lancaster, PA, let’s book your session. I will guide you through the process to make sure your session is as fun as it is memorable.
Why This Season Matters: Capturing Your Family Right Now, Just As You Are | Lancaster PA Family Photographer
Fall has a way of making us pause.
Maybe it’s the golden light through the trees, the sound of leaves crunching under little feet, or the way the air shifts just enough to make you pull your kids in a little closer.
Whatever it is, this season has always felt special to me and it’s one of the most meaningful times to photograph families.
As a Lancaster family photographer, I’ve learned that the beauty of fall isn’t just in the colors. It’s in the moments you’ll never get back.
This Version of Your Family Won’t Be Here Next Fall.
It sounds dramatic, but it’s true.
Your toddler’s dimpled hands will stretch out. That snaggle-toothed grin will be replaced with a full-grown smile. The way your kids lean into you, the silly inside jokes, the gap-toothed giggles... they’ll grow and change before you realize it.
And one day, when you look back, you’ll be so grateful you stopped time…even just for a moment.
The Best Photos Aren’t Perfect, They’re Honest
You don’t need to lose 10 pounds or wait for your kids to act just right. You don’t need a magazine-perfect outfit lineup. You don’t need to feel like everything is “together.”
You just need to show up and be you.
Because the best images come from connection, not perfection. My job is to help you relax, play with your kids, and enjoy the people you love most. I’ll guide you every step of the way so nothing feels awkward or forced.
Fall Doesn’t Wait (And Neither Should You)
The truth is autumn is fleeting. The leaves peak for only a few short weeks, and my calendar fills even faster.
If you’ve been thinking about fall family photos, now’s the time to reach out. Once the season passes, we don’t get a second chance until next year...and your family will be a whole year older by then.
Let’s Make It Happen
If your heart knows it’s time, don’t wait. Let’s capture the joy, the chaos, the connection, and the love that makes your family yours…right now, just as you are.
Fall family mini sessions are very limited and booking quickly. You can grab one of those right here.

The Real Moments Are the Ones You’ll Miss Most | Lancaster PA Photographer | Angie Englerth Photography
The Real Moments Are the Ones You’ll Miss Most
As a photographer, I’ve learned something over and over again: the pictures families love the most are rarely the ones where everyone is perfectly posed, smiling in sync, and sitting still. They're the ones filled with movement, laughter, connection and a little bit of chaos.
It's the way your toddler reaches for you with sticky hands. The glance you share with your spouse when the baby lets out that belly laugh. The way your child’s hair catches the sunlight as they run barefoot through the grass.
These are the moments that matter.
And yet, they’re the moments so many families try to “get through” on picture day. We come into sessions with hopes for perfection…coordinated outfits, cheerful moods, calm weather, no meltdowns. I get it. I’ve been there, too.
But can I tell you a secret?
The best photos happen in between the plan. When your youngest decides to flop down in the middle of a field, or your oldest grabs your hand unexpectedly. When someone’s giggling too hard to hold still, or your baby just won’t stop clinging to your hip. That’s not failure. That’s family.
And it’s beautiful.
In fact, some of my favorite images ever, mine and my clients’, are the ones where something “went wrong” in the best possible way. The wind blew a little too hard. A toddler yelled something hilarious. Someone tripped into a pile of leaves and we all laughed so hard we cried.
These are the photos you’ll come back to years from now and say, “Remember when…?”
These are the photos that tell your story.
So if you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to book photos…when the kids are a little older, when you lose that baby weight, when life slows down…please know this: there is no perfect time.
But there is right now.
Let’s capture the real stuff. The good stuff. The stuff you’ll miss.
Ready when you are.
If you're craving a session that feels relaxed, honest, and joyful…even with the chaos, I’m here for it. Let’s make some magic out of the mess together. Reach out anytime to book your session.
Before the Leaves Fall | Lancaster PA Family Photographer | Angie Englerth
Before the Leaves Fall
Every year, I swear I won’t let fall pass me by.
But somehow, it always sneaks past faster than I planned.
One minute we’re buying school supplies.
The next, the air is cooler, the leaves are turning, and apple cider is in every grocery cart.
It’s cozy. It’s busy. It’s beautiful.
And it never lasts long enough.
That’s part of why I open fall mini session booking early.
Because these sessions tend to fill quickly.
Because the golden light in fall is magic.
Because your kids are growing fast.
And because you deserve to be in the photos too, not just the one taking them.
If you wait too long, you know what happens:
The calendar fills. The weekends disappear.
And before you know it, you're pulling out Christmas jammies and wishing you’d booked that session after all.
So if you’ve been thinking about it, this is your sign.
Pick the sweaters. Imagine the crunch of leaves.
Picture the laughter, the snuggles, and the little moments you’ll want to remember forever.
Fall doesn’t last, but the photos will.
Let’s make some magic before the leaves fall.
Fall sessions and Fall Family Minis are limited and tend to fill quickly. If you’re looking for a Lancaster family photographer, now’s the time to book!

What to Wear for Family Photos: Timeless Outfit Ideas That Always Work | Lancaster PA Family Photographer | Angie Englerth Photography
What to Wear for Family Photos: Timeless Outfit Ideas That Always Work
Planning a family photo session is exciting, but deciding what to wear can sometimes feel overwhelming. You want everyone to look coordinated, comfortable, and most importantly, like themselves; all while creating beautiful, timeless images you’ll cherish for years.
As a Lancaster PA family photographer and a mom of four myself, I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t when it comes to outfits. Here are my top tips to help you dress your family for photos that will stand the test of time.
Style Tips for Timeless Family Photos
1. Keep It Classic, Not Trendy
Avoid overly trendy clothes or flashy logos. Instead, choose classic pieces that won’t look dated in a few years. Think simple patterns like stripes or small florals, and timeless wardrobe staples such as button-down shirts, cardigans, and well-fitting jeans or chinos.
2. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Matching outfits can sometimes look too “uniform.” Instead, aim for a coordinated color palette with complementary shades and textures. This creates visual harmony while allowing each family member’s personality to shine.
3. Prioritize Comfort
If kids (or adults!) aren’t comfortable, it will show in the photos. Choose clothes that fit well and allow freedom of movement because natural smiles come easiest when everyone feels good.
4. Add Layers and Accessories
Layering with scarves, sweaters, or jackets adds depth to photos. Simple accessories like hats, belts, or delicate jewelry can enhance your look without overwhelming it.
Seasonal Color Palettes That Always Work
Picking the right colors for your family photos is key to achieving that timeless, cohesive look. Here are some tried-and-true palettes for each season:
Spring
Soft pastels like blush pink, sage green, light blue, and creamy neutrals feel fresh and light. Linen fabrics and flowy dresses fit perfectly with spring’s gentle vibe.
Summer
Bright but soft colors work well. Think coral, turquoise, sunny yellow, and crisp white. Light cottons and breathable fabrics keep everyone comfortable in the heat.
Fall
Warm earthy tones make for cozy, inviting photos. Consider rust, mustard, olive green, burgundy, and deep navy. Layering with sweaters and scarves is a plus!
Winter
Rich jewel tones like emerald green, deep plum, navy, and cranberry stand out beautifully against winter’s cooler backdrop. Velvet, wool, and knits add texture and warmth.
Final Thoughts
Remember, your family photos are about capturing your unique connection and joy. When you feel comfortable and coordinated, it shows in every smile and glance. Keep these timeless outfit ideas and seasonal palettes in mind to create photos you’ll treasure forever.

The Secret to Getting Natural Smiles in Photos | Lancaster PA Family Photographer | Angie Englerth
The Secret to Getting Natural Smiles in Photos
(Even with Toddlers)
If you've ever walked away from a photo session wondering, “Did we get anything good?”
You are so not alone.
As a Lancaster PA family photographer (and a mom of four), I’ve been on both sides of the camera with toddlers who would rather do literally anything else.
But here’s the truth: natural smiles…the real, belly-laugh kind…are totally possible. And no, it doesn’t have to require bribery or perfectly behaved kids. It just takes a little connection, some silly questions, and a whole lot of play.
It Starts With Banter (The Sillier, the Better)
Want to know my favorite question to ask during a session?
→ “Who has the stinkiest feet in your house?”
It never fails. Someone always shouts “Dad!” and the giggles just roll from there.
As a family photographer in Lancaster PA, I love using humor and conversation to bring out kids’ true personalities. We chat about favorite pizza toppings, pretend birds are landing on my head mid-photo, and even see who can make the best fart noise (with their mouth, of course).
It’s not about making them behave. It’s about making them laugh.
When they’re laughing, they’re relaxed. And when they’re relaxed? We get the magic.
Play Over Posing
I guide families into simple, natural moments.
Tickles. Races. Squeezes so tight they spill into laughter.
Toddlers especially thrive when we lean into what they’re already doing: running, exploring, being silly. I’ll follow their lead and capture the in-between magic.
If you’ve been searching for a Lancaster PA family photographer who can roll with the chaos and still deliver timeless, heartfelt images, I might just be your girl.
Your Energy Sets the Tone
Here’s a secret: kids take their cues from you.
If you're tense or worried about how they’re acting, they feel it.
But if you lean in and just enjoy them for who they are, you’ll be amazed what we can create together.
Trust me with the chaos. I’ve got four kids, and I know how to find beauty in the messy moments.
The Best Smiles Are Never Forced
Some of my favorite shots are the ones that happen in between, the ones you didn’t plan for.
A little giggle at my camera noises.
A glance up at mom during a quiet moment.
A surprised laugh when I pretend to trip over a pinecone.
Real smiles come when we’re not trying so hard.
That’s where the heart is.
Let’s Capture the Real Stuff
If you’re looking for a Lancaster PA family photographer who knows how to turn chaos into keepsakes and bring out the best in even the busiest little ones, I’d love to work with you.

3 Tips for Gorgeous Summer Family Photos | Angie Englerth Photography
3 Tips for Gorgeous Summer Family Photos
Summer is a great time for family photos…longer days, glowing sunsets, and everyone’s in a more relaxed, playful mood. Whether you’re planning a session on the beach, in a grassy field, or in your own backyard, these three simple tips will help your family look and feel amazing in your photos.
1. Choose Light, Airy Clothing
Summer light is soft and golden. Your outfits should match that vibe! Think light colors, soft neutrals, and pastels like blush, ivory, sky blue, or sage green. These tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your faces and connection, not busy patterns.
Style tip: Avoid logos and neon colors (they reflect weirdly in sunlight). Linen, cotton, and other breathable fabrics are perfect for keeping cool and comfortable.
2. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone in identical white shirts and jeans. Instead, aim for coordinating outfits that blend together in a natural way. Pick a soft color palette, then mix and match textures and layers within that scheme.
Style tip: Start with mom’s outfit first…something she feels beautiful and comfortable in! Then build the rest of the family’s wardrobe around that.
3. Embrace Barefoot, Windy Hair, and Play
Summer photos are about capturing joy, not perfection. If the kids kick off their shoes, or if the wind catches your hair just right…that’s the magic. Some of the most beautiful images happen when families are relaxed and just enjoying the moment together.
Style tip: Let the kids bring something fun! Bubbles, a straw hat, or a favorite summer book can add a playful touch and help them feel at ease.

Extended Family Session in the Greenhouse | Lancaster Family Photographer | Angie Englerth
Extended Family Session in the Greenhouse
I never got around to posting this blog last year so why not now?!
Sam reached out to me many months in advance about setting up this session. I thought it was a wonderful idea and looked forward to the day it finally came. The date arrived and….it rained. When you have so many people scheduled to meet, it’s nearly impossible to reschedule so we looked at some creative options and ended up in the beautiful greenhouse of Reiff’s! I asked Sam some questions about her session. See what she has to say and then check out a bunch of fun favorites from the session!
What was your favorite part about our session together?
All of it! Ive worked with Angie a few times now and its been great each time. She really takes the time to understand what we want and adds some of her own flare too! With this session we had over 20 people including 9 kids and she was extremely accommodating with everyone. Our session was supposed to be outside and of course it rained. It was going to be way too difficult to try and reschedule with everyone so with a few hours before the session we switched to an indoor greenhouse that neither of us had been to before and the pictures turned out amazing! (So FYI anyone looking for a unique backdrop for photos... check out local greenhouses!!)
Do you have a favorite photo from your session? If so, which one?
Honestly there are so many. We were lucky enough to include both my husband's side or the family as well as mine. This is the only time we have ever done anything like this. We have individual family pictures as well as a huge group photo! I'm so glad we did it. I cant wait until my son is older to appreciate memories like this. Life is so short and constantly changing. I will forever cherish the memories at this stage of our lives.
What would be your advice to someone considering booking with AEP?
Do it! Angie is great. The photos are great. Everything is great. Did I mention she's great?
Have we done a session together before? If so, why did you decide to book another?
I have done a mini Christmas session, a maternity session, and a newborn session. I first found Angie when I was looking for a photographer for my maternity shoot. I wanted something that was all inclusive. (I'm typically a sweatpants, no makeup, hair in a bun kinda girl). So I wanted something that I could just show up and look fabulous. I was intrigued by Angie's wardrobe selection and she was able to hook me up with someone to do my hair, and another to do my makeup! She even let us use her studio prior to the photos. Her ability to accommodate exactly what I was looking for is the reason I come back for more!
What is your best advice to other moms regarding this age?
Soak it in. Take your time. Get this pictures done. I feel like especially moms are so used to being behind the camera. Sometimes its hard for moms to get in the pictures if they are always the ones taking them. You'll never get this time back. Go to Angie. Be present and be in the photos and you'll be oh so thankful you did.
Now for the part you came for….the photos!

Back in April, we spent one Thursday evening at the park and were blessed with the most beautiful weather! A bunch of mamas came out for their mommy & me captures and we even had a grandma join us! What to Wear for Family Photos | Fall Edition
Dressing for photos is always tricky! I put together a few insiration boards for you as a starting point to plan your family’s wardrobe for your family photo session.
Focus on coordinating, not matching!
Start by choosing a color scheme of 2-3 colors. I recommend choosing mom’s outfit first and building the wardrobe around that. Choose something you love, but also are comfortable in! When you’re comfortable, it shows and you’ll be much more relaxed for your session!
Other things to note: Save the graphics and logos for another time! Also avoid busy patterns. The best way to “spice” up your wardrobe a bit is to incorporate different textures!
