3 Tips for Gorgeous Summer Family Photos | Angie Englerth Photography

3 Tips for Gorgeous Summer Family Photos

Summer is a great time for family photos…longer days, glowing sunsets, and everyone’s in a more relaxed, playful mood. Whether you’re planning a session on the beach, in a grassy field, or in your own backyard, these three simple tips will help your family look and feel amazing in your photos.

1. Choose Light, Airy Clothing

Summer light is soft and golden. Your outfits should match that vibe! Think light colors, soft neutrals, and pastels like blush, ivory, sky blue, or sage green. These tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your faces and connection, not busy patterns.

Style tip: Avoid logos and neon colors (they reflect weirdly in sunlight). Linen, cotton, and other breathable fabrics are perfect for keeping cool and comfortable.

2. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone in identical white shirts and jeans. Instead, aim for coordinating outfits that blend together in a natural way. Pick a soft color palette, then mix and match textures and layers within that scheme.

Style tip: Start with mom’s outfit first…something she feels beautiful and comfortable in! Then build the rest of the family’s wardrobe around that.

3. Embrace Barefoot, Windy Hair, and Play

Summer photos are about capturing joy, not perfection. If the kids kick off their shoes, or if the wind catches your hair just right…that’s the magic. Some of the most beautiful images happen when families are relaxed and just enjoying the moment together.

Style tip: Let the kids bring something fun! Bubbles, a straw hat, or a favorite summer book can add a playful touch and help them feel at ease.

Addison | Lancaster Newborn Photographer | Angie Englerth

Addison

Danielle and Andrew joined me in the studio back in October. Their sweet Addison had arrived and big sister Veronica came along as well! I often get asked if siblings are able to join in on photos at a newborn session. The quick and easy answer is YES! Absolutely! I always include sibling and/or parent photos in every newborn session that would like them! Veronica got started by playing in the playhouse and exploring the studio a bit and then when she was warmed up, she came right over and jumped in some photos with her new baby sister! Addison was an absolute gem to work with and pulled off each and every setup flawlessly! Now I know you came to see some newborn photos and we’re almost there, but I wanted to share some of what Danielle had to say when asked about her experience.

What was your favorite part about our session together?

“I really enjoyed how Angie took control of the session from the start. She took our daughter and began getting her prepped for the session. My husband and I were looking to have our older daughter in some photos and Angie was extremely patient and flexible. She told us she will start taking the newborn photos and when our older daughter was ready and comfortable enough to be in pictures she would accommodate. When our older daughter was ready, we walked over and Angie stopped what she was doing and got her right in the pictures!”

How did you prepare for our photo shoot? How was your experience? Were you nervous or worried before? How did it turn out?

“I felt very unprepared for the photo shoot. I didn’t have outfits picked out or planned. My husband and I were blown away when we saw how many wraps and outfits Angie had to offer for all ages! This immediately calmed my nerves of my pictures coming out terrible because I didn’t plan ahead. Our experience was fantastic. The best part for our older daughter was the little toy kitchen area. That kept her busy while newborn photos were going on. Angie also had a tv on with our daughters favorite show and snacks! Very welcoming for siblings!”

Do you have a favorite photo from your session? If so, which one?

“The pictures of both my daughters together just melts my heart! I also love how Angie captured ONE picture of our newborn smiling!! It’s so hard to capture those moments.”

What would be your advice to someone considering booking with AEP?

“You do not need to bring anything with you to this session!! Angie has everything you need! Maybe a pacifier to calm your newborn through out the session if needed!”

What have been the most memorable parts of this pregnancy?

“Seeing our girl and her heartbeat at every ultrasound appointment!”

Did you have any pregnancy cravings? What were they?

“Chocolate chip pancakes!!”

Do you have other children? How do they react to the pregnancy?

“We have a 2 year old daughter. We would talk to her about her baby sister everyday. Now that she is here, she is the best helper to mommy and daddy!”

What is your best advice to other moms regarding this age?

“Soak up every second! It’s amazing how quick time goes.”

And now, the part you’re really here for…here are some favorites from Addison’s newborn session!

What to Wear for Family Photos | Fall Edition

Dressing for photos is always tricky! I put together a few insiration boards for you as a starting point to plan your family’s wardrobe for your family photo session.

Focus on coordinating, not matching!

Start by choosing a color scheme of 2-3 colors. I recommend choosing mom’s outfit first and building the wardrobe around that. Choose something you love, but also are comfortable in! When you’re comfortable, it shows and you’ll be much more relaxed for your session!

Other things to note: Save the graphics and logos for another time! Also avoid busy patterns. The best way to “spice” up your wardrobe a bit is to incorporate different textures!

Here are five fun wardrobes to start your planning for your Fall family photos! And if you’re looking for a photographer, I’m your girl!

Everything is linked below! Enjoy!

Leesha | Maternity Session

Leesha and Mark came to see me back in the fall for their maternity session while expecting twins! (Yes, I am so behind in blogging!) Leesha was like a supermodel the whole time and Mark was so kind and encouraging to her! We were blessed with beautiful weather and the best fall sunlight! I have so many favorites from Leesha’s session, but I personally think she rocked the red gown! Take a look….what do you think?

Kantner Family 2021 | Lancaster Family Photographer | Angie Englerth

Kantner Family

What a joy it has been to capture this family over the last several years! When they first told me they were moving, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t selfishly sad about it, but also, very excited for them! What a gift to these girls to get to experience life in this way!

To the Kantner family, I pray that you are settling in well to your new home and that you can enjoy the photos we’ve captured together for many more years to come!

I have to start this post with the image that started it all from the session that I first worked with this sweet family! Then sprinkle in some flashbacks to previous sessions and don’t forget their feature on the Love What Matters blog! Then the latest (and hopefully not last!) session with them!

Wyatt | Lancaster Newborn Photographer | Angie Englerth

WYATT

Cheyenne came to be just before her due date and thankfully, I was able to fit them in. I’m so glad it worked out because this family was so easy to work with and fun to chat with! Wyatt was just the sweetest and slept through his whole session. We finished everything in record time and the photos turned out wonderful! I will of course share some favorites, but first, here is a little Q&A with Cheyenne.

What was your favorite part about our session together?
Everything, watching my newborn smile and her capturing us and him.

How did you prepare for our photo shoot? How was your experience? Were you nervous or worried before? How did it turn out?
Our experience was great. She knew her stuff, was quick, didn’t have to think, and was gentle with my son. The photos were AMAZING!!!!!

What is the first thing that ran through your mind when you found out you were pregnant?
Finally!! I am so excited and happy!!

What have been the most memorable parts of this pregnancy?
Feeling him kick. Rubbing my belly, not getting morning sickness.

Did you have any pregnancy cravings? What were they?
Rice crispy treats, lol, but I really wanted Savory foods.

2020 Highlights | A Year in Review

As I sit here to write this blog post, I’m not sure where to begin. I know I am not alone in saying that 2020 was a hard year full of challenges and obstacles that we were forced to find ways to navigate through. In my personal life alone, there were challenges.

We watched my Mother in law battle cancer and brain tumors that required surgery and radiation.
I landed in the hospital three times in March and April for kidney trouble, alone as the hospital was on lockdown.
We struggled, and are still struggling, with remote learning with our oldest.
We navigated through months of my business being closed and my income going from a substantial part of our household to nothing.

When I began to work on gathering highlights for the year, my heart sank. It truly hit me how hard this year has been. My folders for Milestone, Maternity and Family sessions that once were full of many moments captured, felt insufficient. When I began to run my numbers for the year, I felt a pit in my stomach, like I was letting my family down. This year was HARD.

That said, I also realize just how fortunate we are. God provided and we were always able to pay our bills. I was able to get the medical care I needed to avoid any permanent kidney damage. My mother in law was able to complete her treatments and is currently doing great! Our son is still struggling with school, but after actively seeking answers this year, we were able to get him the help he needs and he is on his way to being the best version of himself.

My family has grown stronger this year with all the time we’ve been forced to spend together. We’ve gone on camping adventures together, hiked and explored together, build box forces together, played games together, laughed together, cried together and grown together. That alone makes all the hardship worth it to me. I pray that I never take it for granted again to spend time with my kids while they are still kids and form bonds with them that will last a lifetime.

My sister in law recently reminded me of Hebrews 13:5 “God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’” That could not be more true for me this year. I am not sure what I would do if I did not have the hope that God is in control and he works all things together for my good.

Now for the highlights, which I know is why you are all here anyway. A huge highlight for me was being able to spend more time on sessions for friends and family. Instead of cramming them into my schedule where I could, I was able to dedicate time to them alone which made for some magical sessions! I gained a new niece and nephew and was able to have sessions for them as well! I also have a client, Alyssa, who definitely deserves a serious shoutout after trusting me to capture her fourth maternity and newborn sessions in a row. (Thank you Alyssa!)

2021-01-04_0003.jpg

The newborn aspect of my business remained fairly stable throughout the year and I cannot state enough how thankful I am for trusting me to capture these first moments for you. Sure, studio sessions looked a lot different this year, but thank you to those who accepted the new policies and just rolled with the punches to get through sessions safely!

I also feel the healthcare workers deserve a special shoutout! I am sharing some of my clients this year who are frontline workers, but there are so many more of you out there. Sincerest thanks for all you do and are doing!

I know this year isn’t going to be a magical reset button, but I am hopeful and optimistic that I will be able to see more of you this year and capture more priceless memories for your family. Cheers to 2021 and God Bless!

Kristin & Olivia

I have been working with Kristin and Olivia for many years now and was so excited when Kristin booked a spot at this year’s Mommy & Me Event! I truly can never put into words what this event means to me and what it does for each mama that walks through the door. Yes, you are pampered. Yes, you get time with girlfriends. Yes, you get to dress up. But the real treat? You get to capture the look that your children give you to keep forever. Their love and adoration is so evident in these images and for me, the most rewarding part of my job is watching these mamas realize that when they view their images.

If you are considering joining this event next year, be sure to sign up for the newsletter! The planning has already begun and I promise you will not regret coming out!

Now, here are some favorites from Kristin & Olivia’s session!

Lisa & Keana | Mommy & Me {Dream Lighting} Event 2020

Mommy & Keana

Lisa first came to me when she was pregnant with Keana. We have worked together for her maternity, newborn and many milestone and family sessions. One thing I have treasured is that Lisa came to my first Mommy & Me {Dream Lighting} Event without really knowing what to expect and has since returned to every event. It is so fun to watch Keana grow up right in front of the camera and even more so to watch their mommy/daughter relationship blossom!

First, look at this fun throwback to see all of Lisa and Keana’s Mommy & Me Sessions to date. Then, of course some favorites from this year’s session!

Marabelle | Lancaster Newborn Photographer

Marabelle

Marabelle is my sweet niece who is now no longer a newborn (whoops), but I felt her session still deserved to hit the blog! She is a rainbow baby and the sweetest little sister to her bigger brothers. She fits into our giant cousin crew (now nine kiddos) perfectly and I, for one, cannot wait to see the young woman she grows up to be! Now for the fun part, here are some favorites from her session!

Take the Picture | Lancaster Maternity, Newborn & Family Photographer | Angie Englerth

phone background_white.jpg

Hey mama! Yes, you! Hiding in the bathroom? Feeding your baby in the dark? Sitting in the car for a few minutes before going into the grocery store? I see you. I am you.

The late nights. The bodily fluids, my gosh, the amount of bodily fluids little humans can make! The tantrums. The clinginess. The endless laundry. The mess of toys. Motherhood is full of challenges.

If you’re like me, you can’t wait for your kids to go to bed each night. Then you lay in bed looking at pictures of them reminding yourself how much you love them and how much more meaningful your life is because of them.

That’s where I come in! Let’s chat about the moments you’d like to freeze in time with a photo. You know, the smiles and laughs. The wonder in their eyes. The endless snuggles, kisses and repeated whispers of “I love you Mommy.”

Let’s capture it together so when you’re hiding in the bathroom or the car or the floor in your closet (no? Just me?), you can look at your phone background and be reminded that it’s all worth it.

All that to say, booking for Spring 2020 is now open!

Kanter Family | Lancaster Family Photographer | Angie Englerth

Kanter Family

It’s been way too long since I have blogged a session so I’m just going to jump back in! Hopefully I can catch up and share all the fun sessions we’ve had around here lately! Starting with the Kanter family! We had such a fun session and while all the girls weren’t always 100% into it, we made sure to take lots of “breaks” for play!

Grace | Mommy & Me {Dream Lighting} Session | Angie Englerth

Grace

When Grace reached out to me to request a Mommy & Me session, I was thrilled. This would be my last session before maternity leave and what a way to go out! We planned the dresses and then the crowns and were so excited when the session day arrived. Grace and Katrina were so fun together and rocked their whole session! Here are a few favorites from the session including Grace’s choice for a canvas to hang in her office!

A Birth Story | Isabel Marie | Angie Englerth Photography

IMG_5644.JPG

Where do I begin? I suppose our birth story begins right around 37 weeks. I began having contractions that I originally assumed were Braxton Hicks. They were consistent and strong so we made the decision to go into triage (those of you who are local understand the 222 trouble lately so we didn’t want to wait too long to get in). Long story short, it was a false alarm. Fast forward a few days and I’m still experiencing contractions, but also intense back pain. We went into triage again, again it was a false alarm. The following day, contractions are still strong and consistent, but this time we wait to be seen in the office. The car ride is misery and when we finally get there, I am bent over in so much pain. I will shorten the story as best I can to spare you the details. The midwife checked me and I was barely dilated. After more questions and examining, she suspected something related to the kidney or bladder and sent me over to triage…..my third visit in a week. This time, they ordered an ultrasound of my kidneys and bladder and discovered I had Hydronephrosis, or a swollen kidney. This explained all my pain and they suspected my body was contracting as a reaction to the pain. It took about a week and a half to recover, but I was finally feeling okay again. Then, two days before my due date, contractions started again. Back to triage we go. Again, they sent me home. The next day, I cleaned the house top to bottom - like on my hands and knees scrubbing the floor kind of cleaning. I couldn’t sleep that night because the contractions were getting stronger. Ben woke up for work at 5:00 and could tell things were picking up. He left for work and told me to keep him updated.

I did not want to get sent home from triage again so I did everything I could to stop the contractions. I took a warm bath, chugged a ton of water, laid down and put my feet up, but alas, they were getting much more intense and close together. I labored as long as I could, but when Jackson began to appear worried about me, I knew I had to make the call. The midwife told me to come in for a labor check. Ben was ready to leave work, but wouldn’t make it home in time to get me in to see the midwife. Lucky for me, I am blessed with sweet friends and family in my life and one of these friends didn’t hesitate to jump in her car and head over. She was at my house in less than ten minutes, packed up the boys and started driving us in. She was timing my contractions the whole ride and by the time we arrived, they were a solid three minutes apart and I was not able to talk through them. She dropped me at the door and took the kids to play at the mall for a bit. Ben was on his way so I just went in to get started. Fast forward a bit, I was 5 cm and fully effaced! I broke down in tears just relieved to not be sent home again. They brought Ben back to me when he arrived and off to triage we went again.

It took some time for a delivery room to open up and for them to get my IV started so there I was in triage breathing through contractions as best I could, but I was so ready for that epidural. Once I got to my room, got the epidural and was checked, I was 7 cm. The midwife broke my water and then we waited and rested. My nurses (shout out to the awesome nurses at Women & Babies!!!) had been with me from the start of their shift and would be leaving at 7:00 so the running joke was that we had to get her out by then so they could meet her.

It was probably around 6:30 I started feeling lots of pressure and let my nurse know. It was time! I was 10 cm and ready to go! The midwife was with another mama at the time so she told my nurses to help me with a practice push. Ben was on my right and my nurse was on my left. Here we go….I began pushing, but immediately was met with wide eyes from both of them and being told firmly to “Stop, stop pushing.” Apparently, Isabel was ready to come out and didn’t want to wait any longer. (She had made her appearance during that practice push, but we didn’t have our midwife in the room yet). Our midwife came in and quickly got ready. I had to breathe through the next contraction which proved to be very challenging. Then when the midwife gave the go ahead, I gave a big old push and Isabel joined us…at 7:01….just in time to meet the sweet nurses that had supported me all day. After pushing for over two hours with each of the boys, one push was a pleasant surprise. She was absolutely perfect and hung out on my chest for the next hour.

We arranged for the boys to come in right away to meet her and let me just say, there is nothing sweeter as a parent than watching your children become big siblings. Jackson was in awe and kept loving and kissing on her. Sawyer wanted to snuggle and hold her right away. The night will not leave my memory anytime soon. We were a finally a family of five and I can’t explain the feeling that rushed over Ben and I of feeling complete - as if Isabel was always meant to be ours, we just needed to trust God’s timing.

I have shared so much of our journey from our miscarriages to secondary infertility to my tumor and so much more. I pray that somehow our story can encourage another mama out there and if you are currently struggling with infertility or anything for that matter that is challenging to you and your family, please know we are praying for you. We are on the other end of it now, but going through it, I remember all to well the raw feelings and emotions. I am so grateful for the family God has blessed me with and I promise you that I am not taking a single day of it for granted.

Now for some fun…here are some shares from our hospital stay (phone pictures) and then some of my captures of Isabel in the studio.

Rainbow Pregnancy | Angie Englerth Photography

Angie’s Story

Where to even begin. For those that have followed along with me for a while, you probably know much of our story already. Back in 2017, I organized a very special rainbow maternity project and shared a bit of my story there. To make a long story short(er), we found ourselves having trouble growing our family after Jackson. We lost a pregnancy in July 2014 and then struggled to get pregnant again until our first miracle baby (Sawyer) arrived in December 2015. I suffered some health issues in December 2016 which required surgery in May 2017. Once we received the all clear (I had a golf ball sized tumor in my sinuses that ended up being nothing of concern!), we decided we were ready to try expanding our family once again. (I share in a little more detail here). We were blessed immediately with a positive pregnancy test. Needless to say, we were thrilled! Sadly, we lost that baby a week after finding out in June 2017. Then began a painful waiting process. It wouldn’t be until October 2018 before we had another viable pregnancy (I had a chemical pregnancy as well in August 2018).

All of these dates may seem totally insignificant, but God’s timing is absolutely perfect. You see, Ben was working crazy hours for three years. I’m talking 7 days a week….swing shift….10-16 hour days….it was insane. It was beyond challenging on our marriage and our boys. Looking back, I can’t imagine juggling a third child in the midst of that chaos. Now go back to when we found out we were expecting in October 2018. We were so thrilled and knew we would just have to make it work whatever happened. Ben began job hunting more seriously to get out of his crazy schedule and we just prayed that something would open up. Eventually, in January, something did open up. At his current job, in a position he worked previously years ago. He made the switch and while his schedule is still a little unpredictable, we have him home! And we wouldn’t trade that for a minute. For those that know us on a more personal level, you know the struggle we went through to get here and what it means to have him around more now. Okay, that was a bit of a tangent, but all this to say, God’s timing is perfect. This baby will be joining our family at a time when Ben will be much more available and present in our home life.

When we found out this baby was a girl, well….I’m not sure I can put into words how we felt. Blessed. So so blessed. No matter what the gender, this baby was already so loved and so wanted. A girl just brings us something new and different and we are excited to see how she fits into our family. We decided on a name that mean’s God’s promise because that is truly what she means to us. God promises that He will make all things work together for our good….even when we don’t see it…..even when we have to go through a lot of bad to get to it. He is working things together for our good. This baby is such a sweet symbol of positive change for our family. An answer to years of prayers…not just to expand our family, but to be able to be a family. To be together and not just working all the time.

A lot of people ask if we are done since this is a girl. While I feel this is a pretty private question, I have been fairly public with my journey so why not answer this too. The answer is we don’t know. We want to fully enjoy our time with this baby and our time as a family of five (whether it stays that way forever or not). What I can tell you is this - I have never felt such a deep appreciation for a pregnancy than this one. I realize looking back how naive I was when I was carrying Jackson and not fully appreciating the miracle that it was. I definitely had more of an appreciation with my pregnancy with Sawyer, but this one has felt even more special. Maybe because it could very well be my last. Maybe because we waited so long for this sweet girl. Who knows.

I am very pregnant/hormonal/sentimental writing this so thank you for bearing with me! Maternity photos have always been on my mind, but when it came down to it, I just never felt like doing them. On this morning, the boys brought it up (Jackson did at least) and I warmed up to the idea. I decided to put my discomfort aside and just get it done! The boys helped choose my dresses and accessories and pushed the button on the camera for me. I am so glad I did it (and hopefully will still do some with the Mr). I am so grateful for the way God has blessed me and our family. Now for the fun part….enjoy some favorites from my session with the boys!

Chelsea | Mommy & Me {Dream Lighting} Event | Angie Englerth

Chelsea

When Chelsea signed up for this year’s event, I did a little happy dance. See, Chelsea is married to Ben’s cousin and when family trusts me to capture their memories and chooses to invest in my small business, it is the biggest compliment I can ask for! Here’s a little Q&A with Chelsea and some favorites from her session with Cody.

What was your initial reaction when you saw the ad for the Mommy & Event for the first time?
Yay, I'm a mom now- I can participate!

What expectations did you have for the day of the event? What were your concerns?
I expected it to be fun, and was confident that Angie would have everything well set up, especially since she had done this event several times before.

What is something you loved about the event day itself?
I loved getting in front of the camera with Cody because he's such a ham. I could just kind of goof around with him and know that Angie would capture all the special moments.

What was your initial reaction to your images? How was your order appointment?
Loved the pictures. I brought my husband with so we could see them for the first time together, and it was so much fun to look through them in person so Angie could see our reactions.

What did this event mean to you?
It was so special to have those moments with my baby and to capture this stage on film. Even though it's only been a few weeks, I'm already looking at the pictures and feeling nostalgic!

In one word, how would you describe this event?
Memorable

Is there an image that stands out as a favorite? What is it? Why is it your favorite?
The one where my son is looking at me. We had such trouble getting a picture of him looking at me because he was distracted by the camera and the lights. When he finally did, Angie captured the moment and it was so special. Absolutely worth it, and that's definitely my favorite picture.

And now for the fun part, the images from Chelsea’s spot at our event! Enjoy!
